Northern Region's Yorkshire Three Peak Challenge

7.30 am on Saturday, 9 June 2007 saw a team of 34 young(ish) hopefuls, including IRC Northern members Ian Waines, Louise Higgins and Belinda Smith, embark on a gruelling 26 mile, 3 mountain trek - the Yorkshire 3 Peaks - all in the name of raising money for the International Rescue Corps.

The target time for the trek is traditionally 12 hours, which seemed achievable until we set off at 7.30 in the blistering sunshine and started our first ascent. Then things started to look pretty grim and the prospect of 34 of us getting round in 12 hours seemed increasingly unrealistic - in fact just getting round at all was starting to seem like a major achievement in itself. But we put our heads down and carried on. As did the sun, which kindly hid behind clouds for the downhills but emerged in all its glory for the ascents - lucky, lucky us.

But, with the help of hats (and Ian's buff), sunscreen, insect repellent, bandages, blister plasters, painkillers (the drugs really DO work) and good old Yorkshire grit and determination, 7.30 pm arrived and, amazingly, every single one of us had made it across the finish line! The walk was a great success in terms of personal achievement and teamwork and was also an excellent social event. And to cap it all, the sponsor money raised will be in excess of £3,000, plus gift aid.

A big thanks to all involved, from Louise
