“I only joined the corps at the beginning of the year and being a new member I found myself wanting to get directly involved with everything IRC have to offer. Other than obviously attending the monthly training sessions and meetings, one of the most effective ways to do this as a new member is to get involved with the fundraising side of things.

I work at a small college campus which caters for a reasonable number of masters and PhD students, and back in March I came up with the idea of holding a charity fancy dress party. I got in touch with the student union and they thought it was a great idea. They would let us have the venue for free and arrange for a DJ. Sticking with the whole Thunderbird theme we decided to make the dress code heroes and heroines, people would be charged £3 to get in and in return we would display some of our work and equipment. The date was set May Friday the 13th.

I decorated our hall in the IRC colours and set up a display area with photos, equipment and our promotional video. Martin Maskell and Darren Joiner, also from Southern region, came down on the night to help me out. The event began at 8 and it wasn’t long before the hall started to fill up. We had characters ranging from the Men in Black, Cat woman, and Popeye to the Incredibles and Superwoman all taking an interest in the work of IRC. One of the highlights of the night was Martin and Darren judging the best costume. The winner was Wonder woman who won a bottle of champagne which was kindly donated to us. When awarded with her prize she thanked us then said its guys like you that make a difference. That line stuck with me through the night and made me remember exactly why I joined – to make a difference!

The party finished at 2am and by the end of the night we had raised £190. It may sound a modest amount but I was very pleased with the amount raised considering the size of the college. In my eyes the event was a success and an example of new fundraising ideas. I enjoyed myself very much organising the whole thing and am already thinking of new idea’s to raise even more funds.

Thanks to Martin and Darren for helping out and the student union for help in organising the event”
