On the evening of the 11th May 2007, a male, approx 20 years of age had been reported as having jumped from the Humber Bridge. Humber Rescue had been called out but were unable to locate his body. On the morning of the 12th May 2007, as is the normal practice for IRC when training on the Humber, the Coastguard Agency was contacted for an up to date weather forecast and also to inform them that we would be on the River. Due to the links with Humber Rescue, IRC was asked to keep a look out at low tide for the above male. This gave members a chance to turn training into practical boat skills, travelling along a section of the coast at low water and in poor conditions. The search lasted for approximately 1.5 hours with Willie McMartin, Sue Brown and Tracy Bowen crewing the boat. On the 13th May 2007, IRC were again requested to search at low tide in an area between a shopping centre and the local marina. This included a section of pier which had been used by the pilots. The location had a large area of timber pier built out into the water and created a very large number of places where the missing male could had been swept into. In this location an object which may have been the missing male was spotted. It was not possible to enter by boat and so a swimmer was deployed. Full safety measures were used to ensure they were not placed in danger during this section of the search. On reaching the object it was found to be nothing more than rubbish. Once again the search lasted for approximately 1.5 hours. The crew on this occasion was Willie McMartin, Ray Gray and Ian Waines. To date the male has not been found. |
