Friday 3rd March 2000, 20:30hrs GMT

Following the recent disaster in Mozambique, the International Rescue Corps was requested by DFID to supply expertise to aid the relief effort.

Yesterday, a team of 15 specialist boat handlers left on a DFID chartered aircraft from RAF Manston in Kent and arrived in Maputo, Mozambique, today.  They will stay there tonight, awaiting further relief workers (RNLI) arriving from the UK tomorrow.

Their role will be to locate and recover survivors on the fold planes, distribute aid and medical supplies and assist other agencies in the relief effort.

This is a DFID co-ordinated operation.

Sunday 5th March 2000, 21:00hrs GMT

The IRC Team arrived in Maputo on Friday 3rd March and were awaiting arrival of other support teams prior to moving out.

The IRC team will move to the Northern Region of Mozambique and work with the River Save area. Transport to this area will be via Hercules aircraft belonging to the Belgian Air Force.

The RNLI component from the UK is working in the Beira area.  This location is also the central co-ordination point for the rescue and relief effort.

Tuesday 7th March 2000, 19:00hrs GMT

The IRC Team is in Mahave (spelling varies) and will be working there for two or three days transporting aid to isolated groups on the north bank of the Save river; they have so far delivered food and oil to approximately 300 people stranded there.

Temperatures reported to be 130F and area being hit by a tropical storm. 

All members are reported to be fit and well.

Wednesday 8th March 2000, 19:00hrs GMT

The IRC Team have completed their work in the Save area and will be moving to Biera tomorrow.  They are awaiting further deployment.

Thursday 9th March 2000, 18:00hrs GMT

The Team are now in Biera awaiting further deployment.  Earlier today they met with the president of Mozambique and DFID officials.

Sunday 12th March 2000, 13:00hrs GMT

The IRC Team are still in Biera but will shortly be sending a team to the Buzi river and assisting fire service and RNLI teams to deliver aid and carry out medical assessments.  It has been raining since 05:00 this morning (local time) and the weather is hot.

All members are reported fit and well.

Wednesday 15th March 2000, 18:00hrs GMT

The Team have been involved delivering aid and carrying out medical assessments with representatives of the RNLI and Fire Service.  They are now preparing to return home in the next day or so.

Thursday 16th March 2000, 12:00hrs GMT

The International Rescue Corps Team which mobilised to assist in Mozambique have now arrived safely back in the UK.  A report on the mission will be posted on this web site in due course.
