March 05

Well sometimes in the life of IRC things are very quiet – this isn’t true at the moment!  Recently the corps has been extremely busy in this country assisting various police forces.

Following Valentines Day, a young woman went missing from her home in Hull. IRC were called upon by Humberside Police to assist in the search for her. To this day we are still involved on an ad hoc basis assisting in the search as and when we can. More recently Scottish members of IRC were involved in looking for a father and son who went missing when their boat capsized on Loch Lomond.

As with all these search and rescue efforts our thoughts go out to all the families involved.

IRC in the search for missing Hull woman

International Rescue Corps were drafted in to the search for the missing Hull women Joanne Nelson. Joanne went missing on Valentines Day. IRC, as search and rescue specialists, put in an offer of assistance to Humberside Police on the following Wednesday and were given a few areas to search where Joanne may have been. The corps utilised its skills in navigation to grid search areas and then explore every possible zone within the grid. This included various types of landscapes and terrains and called upon IRC’s strong coordination skills to search particular areas effectively. Working closely with the police an area of 800 square miles was searched but alas without any success.

To this day Joanne is still missing and we are always on stand by should the police feel they need our help again. All our hopes are that she is found soon.

IRC and its new ambulance

Following extensive fundraising by the Scottish region of IRC, we have now been able to replace our old and crumbling ambulance. The old ambulance proved invaluable in giving support and first aid assistance at fetes and other various events predominantly throughout the Scottish region. The new ambulance is virtually ready and has been made possible by the kindness and generosity of everyone who donated funds and 2 companies – Bott and AM
Philips who in turn supplied a suitable van and helped kit it out with fixtures and fittings.

To commemorate the commissioning of the new vehicle, Fern Britton and Philip Schofield, presenters from ITV's This Morning programme, have kindly offered to ‘cut the ribbon’. Fern and Philip were very keen to help out on this and
have followed our work closely since last year when they awarded IRC with a Vodafone Lifesavers award for our work in the Glasgow plastics factory explosion. The ceremony will take place in the next few weeks so watch out for more news in the next edition.
