Welcome to the monthly newsletter from International Rescue Corps. This newsletter is designed to give you a brief look into our work and some of the activities we get up to.

As this newsletter goes to press we are seeing pictures and hearing reports of the devastating effect of Hurricane Katrina – IRC were on hand to assist the US should they require help. Unfortunately this offer was refused. However IRC continues to monitor the situation closely and would be willing to help if needed and as always we send our deepest sympathy to the victims and their relatives and wish a speedy recovery to the casualties and survivors.

Experience from the Mia Rose Day

On July 9th 3 members of International Rescue Corps attended the Trim Trail Grand Opening Day organised by the Mia-Lucy Rose Trust. David and Helen Lambard and Tracy Bowen all from IRC’s Eastern region, attended the day on behalf of IRC to accept a cheque from the trust. The opening of the Trim Track went very well with about 200+ people attending. Louis de Bernieres, author of Captain Corelli's Mandolin, presented the cheque. Louis said that it was rather ironic that he was opening up a Trim/Fitness track due to his
size etc. He said he used to really enjoy sport and thought it was a great idea...

Mark Rose introduced the corps and explained how IRC had offered to help out and then asked Helen to speak about the work of the Corps. He then proceeded to hand over the cheque.

A competition was held with lots of teams of people competing against the clock round the trim track. Some people were in fancy dress and this went on for about 2 hours or so. It was organised by local fitness clubs. It was very enjoyable but unfortunately IRC were disqualified / could not enter as teams had to be four or more (David and Tracy were gutted!!!!) which was rather a shame.

Helen Lambard, an operational member said: “All in all it was a very successful day and we were proud to be a part of it. The family were SO very appreciative and it was a delight to be a part of their day.” The family have a number of events planned which are in aid of the corps. IRC has offered to work with them in any way we can to offer support.

IRC assists in BBC’s Casualty programme

A number of months ago members of IRC were asked to review various scripts from the BBC’s Casualty programme. It was an honour to be asked by the programme makers and hopefully they took our advice! The programme is aired on Saturday 10th Sept.

IRC’s new college course and its new members

As the 2004/5 college year ends, the new year starts! IRC has recruited a further 20 members to undertake its 3 year training course. I asked one new member to put together a few words about how and why he joined:-

"My name is Dean Mills, most people call me Deano - but I've been told that it's a tradition within the Corps to give individual nicknames that they hate, so I wait with baited breath!

I live between Bradford and Leeds, but originate from Royal Tunbridge Wells in Kent. I'm 35 years old, married and a father of 2.

At present I work as an IT Technician for ACAS. A few years ago myself and a couple of lads were sitting at the top of Ben Nevis talking about the different rescue teams and the IRC was mentioned. This was at about 18 months after the earthquake in Kobe, Japan. I wanted there and then to join but unfortunately I didn't.

I have now been a member of the Corps now for about 9 months and in this time have been involved with as much as I can, which has incorporated meetings and going away for a weekend exercise, which although extremely tiring, was a great insight into the work of the Corp and made me even more determined to get through my assessment and join the family.

On the Fund raising side I have made just over £600 for the Corps, mostly by asking friends, colleagues and others to give me their 'treasures' so that I may sell them at Car Boot Sales, as well as tin shaking and selling Corps merchandise. I've also got other ideas and events in the pipeline. I consider myself dedicated and a loyal individual to the Corp, and cannot wait to get involved with the training and even hopefully the operational
side."

Fundraising ideas

On our website is a new link which shows some of our attempts at fundraising! A diary will soon be up and running and you will be able to see where we will be in the country at any one time and maybe be able to come along to speak to our members or take part?
