I thought raising money for the IRC would be easy and interesting: interesting yes - easy no. It all started when I wanted to raise money for the IRC, and upon reflection diving was the only thing I could think of doing, and so the 24 hour underwater sponsored event playing games was born. I gained permission from the Marine Safety College in South Shields to use their 4 meter pool and also gained support from Aquanorth a local Newcastle diving school to help with the event they supplied equipment and tanks which was of great help. I had a number of disasters including, arranging this event the same date as the IRC AGM. However even with this minor setback we had helpers from the IRC and also two divers Martin and Garry. Aquanorth’s commitment also extended to the provision of a number of divers, which made the whole event manageable. The event took place at midday on the 31st March until midday on the 1st April. There were two divers under the water at anyone time these divers swapped each hour so each diver had a total of 5 hours underwater within the 24 hour period. Everyone brought food and drink to help keep the divers and helpers hydrated and feed. The IRC members talked to a number of divers on the role of the IRC.
One IRC member managed to talk to Metro radio on the Saturday radio as I had to spend my time under the water. The worse time in the whole event was to jump noisily into the water at 0300 hours in the cold and then spending the hour playing draughts and throwing a plastic torpedo at each other. The whole event went without a hitch; this was due to the divers and helpers commitment to the event and their sense of humour. It is hoped that the event will have raised over £1,000 in total from the individual diver sponsorship. I would like to thank Aquanorth for their help and support, the Marine safety college for the use of the pool, and allowing Ken to help overnight to fill tanks and helping out. I would also like to thank Paul who convinced Morrison’s for a hamper of food and Marks and Spencer’s for a number of tee shirts. Tony Connor |
